Children of Zeus – The Story So Far, a new dawn for British Soul music

First Word Records are proud to present a lengthy body of work from grassroots Manchester exports, Children of Zeus. The Story So Far embodies the duo’s collective works dating back over a decade. Unreleased demos, pivotal pieces pulled from the vaults, and two brand new tracks form a collection that signals the end of their first chapter, before the release of their debut album in 2018.

Konny Kon and Tyler Daley met twelve years ago after both performing a show near Paris in their respective crews, ‘Broke’N’£nglish’ and ‘Body Roq’. A mutual admiration of each other’s work led to the duo coming back together and producing their first track, Coming Home To You.

Since then the pair have been quietly crafting an unprecedented formula, fusing elements of Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz to create a varying but ultimately, signature sound that can be felt throughout The Story So Far. Hailing from the North, they’ve grown within Manchester’s fruitful music scene, breathing soul back into the city, working and performing in harmony with the likes of DRS, LEVELZ, Lenzman, and appearing on stage with Yussef Kamaal for impromptu performances along the way.

Anyone who has been following their work will be fully acquainted with opening track Still Standing, which has become somewhat of a British soul anthem since its release; a melancholic remix by Lenzman bestowed further success on the track and helped further cement the versatility of their voices over a range of different sounds. Crown is a stark reminder of their intrinsic aptitude to send an important message through gritty lyrics and verses. A fitting cut for the narrative of the EP; you’ll find yourself hanging onto their words of coming of age struggles and hurdles throughout their journey so far.

No Strings Attached, a tale of life on the road and the temptation it can bring is layered over lo-fi soul samples and provides a sensual definition to their own brand of ‘Street Soul’. I Want You sees Tyler taking the reigns on a slow, R&B influenced beat. His range as a vocalist can be felt through mesmerising heated verses before quickly burning into Tonight. A dizzyingly infectious flip of a familiar sample, heavily harmonised choruses and caramel vocals act as the perfect expression of their incredible substance and ability to be heard collectively, regardless of musical context.

The EP acts as a gratification to their loyal following thus far and lays out the perfect sonic introduction to those who have yet to stumble upon their collaborative talent. A sugar-coated sample of what has been, and a taster of what’s to come as the duo begin work on their debut album into next year.

The Story So Far is released on October the 6th via First Word Records, Preview/Support below.
