Fresh Bits is Cardiff based four-piece Sock’s first release since emerging in June last year into the city’s ever expanding music scene. Live sets on Sofar Sounds and at Sŵn festival along with supporting slots with the unstoppable force Boy Azooga, stirred up a hunger within the band. Less than a year after their emergence they present us with an LP that draws influences from Khruangbin all the way to Blur. Recorded in a day in the rural farmlands of Mid-Wales, Fresh Bits reflects the experience of their attention grabbing live shows and is the perfect exhibition of what were once just simple ideas coming to fruition.
Gentle riffs against a melancholic backdrop open the LP; lead vocals, though faint in their execution, are reminiscent of early Mac Demarco in the sense that it only takes a small scratch beneath the surface to uncover a complex meaning. A loose, bass-heavy instrumental opens ‘Bored’, elongated dulcet tones highlight what can often be the monotony associated with conversations you don’t want to have, or ever-present situations that have perhaps outstayed their welcome. A husky guitar line dissolves into slow, expressive vocals from lead, Jacob Church in ‘Wot2Do’. Intricately layered percussion beneath vocals reverberating out their offbeat narrative, craft a sound that is dusty, slightly rough around the edges – gently nodding to their collective influences. ‘Weather’ sees the band tapping into higher tempos, playful guitar and bass line tangents below echoing vocals allow you to harness the artistic scope of each individual member.
Experimenting in both off cuff acoustics and and tightly administered percussion constructs a sound that nestles itself between genres. Though ultimately influenced by trippy, funk-rock – you hear elements ranging through surf to jazz and feel their potential as an outfit within a live setting. The album, mixed by Will Barnes and mastered by Charlie Francis at Synergy Mastering, will be released on the 1st of June, through Bubblewrap Collective. It will be available digitally and on limited edition cream vinyl.
You can catch Sock at their album launch in Clwb Ifor Bach on Friday 1st June.
